Found an animal?
Not sure what to do?
Finding an injured, orphaned or vulnerable animal can be difficult, especially when you're unsure whether you should intervene. The right response depends on the animal, its condition and the situation in which it was found.
Step 1
First, stay calm and observe
If it is safe to do so, observe the animal from a distance. Look for signs of injury, distress or immediate danger before approaching or moving it.
Step 2
Avoid feeding or handling the animal
Wild animals can become stressed easily, and inappropriate food or handling can cause further harm. Unless advised otherwise, avoid feeding or giving water to an animal you've found.
Step 3
Don't assume a baby animal is orphaned
A young animal being alone does not always mean it has been abandoned. In some situations, a parent may be nearby and continuing to care for it.
